The SonoHard Ultrasonic Hardness Tester

Data sheet in pdf format here

Features of the Sonohard

  • Direct reading of hardness
  • Easy to use hand held probe can be quickly applied to a variety of surfaces from any direction.
  • Easy to use - no prior experience of hardness measurement techniques required
  • Built in memory for data and calibration points
  • Measures Vickers, Rockwell Brinell and Shore scales
  • Interchangeable probes for use with different surface profiles - pipes - concave surfaces, gears valves etc.
  • Portable works with NiCd battery
  • Motorized version for automatic inspection systems
Introduction to the Sonohard SH75A Ultrasonic Hardness Tester
The Sonohard measures the hardness of surfaces and materials by means of small diamond indenter probe which is pressed on to the surface under examination. The probe is contained in a hand held tool so that it is easy to apply from any direction. The probe is guided by an adaptor piece at the end of the tool so as to maintain the probe perpendicular to the surface under test. The probe can be applied manually or made to advance automatically to the surface.

Principle of Operation
The Sonohard operates by measuring the changes in resonant frequency of the probe when it is applied to the sample surface. The probe is stimulated with a longititudal ultrasonic vibration. When the probe comes into contact with another material the damping effect on the probe is related to the hardness of the sample material - softer materials having a greater damping effect than hard materials. This is reflected in a change of resonant frequency of the probe which is measured by the instrument. Calibrations are entered into the Sonohard using test blocks of known hardness.

Easy to Use
Sonohard and probeThe SH75 is very easy to use and requires no special knowledge of hardness testing in order to operate the instrument. The unit includes all four hardness scales and you can switch between them at the touch of a button. The current scale is always indicated on the display.
To make a hardness measurement the probe is pressed against the surface to be measured and held in position for a few seconds until a reading is obtained. The result is immediately displayed in the selected hardness scale on the display. Several measurements can be taken sequentially and the average and standard deviation will be calculated automatically by the instrument.
The calibration procedure is equally straightforward. A measurement is made on known standard test block and entered into memory as a calibration point. The Sonohard in ideal for inspection and quality control applications in a production environment. It is light weight and portable and can be operated from rechargeable batteries or a power adapter.

Principles of Measurement
When a vibration rod of a certain material is pushed onto the surface of a test sample with a certain force, the softer the material of the sample, the deeper the indentation and the stronger the binding force.
In addition, the higher will be the resonance frequency.
In contrast, the harder the sample material, the weaker the binding force and the lower the resonance frequency.
The checker calculate the hardness of materials from the relationship between resonance frequency and hardness.
