AirScan Indoor Formaldehyde Gas Monitors
NOTE: These are single use (one-time test) air quality test units for formaldehyde. Additional types of test kits are available in units of six to test other gasses such as Ethylene Oxide, Glutataldhyde, Xylene, Methel Alcohol, or Propolene Oxide. Call for pricing and ordering information.

Formaldehyde may be affecting your health.
Formaldehyde gas can cause asthma and allergy symptoms.

The AirScan passive formaldehyde gas monitors are OSHA compliant. These monitors eliminate mail-in analysis delays. AirScan monitors give real-time results so you know if formaldehyde is a problem. AirScan monitors are factory calibrated using NIOSH methods. They meet or exceed OSHA accuracy/precision requirements.

This Air Scan monitor meets both Short Term Exposure Limit (STEL) and Time Weighted Average (TWA) OSHA specifications assuring that established Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL)is not exceeded. The reading shows the average exposure over an 8 hour period. The unit is rated for use in 10% to 95% relative humidity.

NOTE: Contact Safe Home Products to custom order similar test kits for industrial and medical testing of Formaldehyde, Ethylene Oxide, Glutaraldhyde, Xylene, Methyl Alcohol, or Propylene Oxide. Kits are sold in multiples of 6 per chemical type.

AirScan 1056:
Low Level Formaldehyde Monitor TWA
Air Scan Formaldehyde Test Kit
Is An Allergy/Asthma Chemical Trigger Monitor
  • Lower Limit of Detection = 0.03 ppm/8hr TWA (Time Weighted Average)
  • Shelf Life = 18 month at room temperature
  • OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit = 0.75 ppm
  • Threshold Limit Values = 0.30 ppm (ceiling limit) established by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH).
  • NOTE: These are single use (one-time test) air quality test units.

Use the following procedure to obtain your Formaldehyde reading from the Air Scan Formaldehyde Test Kit:

Step #1: Activate Formaldehyde Gas Test Kit
First Step in Activating the AirScan passive formaldehyde gas monitor
  • Place the cap over the sampling port
  • Lay the monitor flat on the table.
  • Press "A" bubble until it snaps
Second Step in Activating the AirScan passive formaldehyde gas monitor
  • Pick up the monitor with your right hand and gently tap once in the palm of your left hand.
  • Lay the monitor on a table and wait until a green line appears in the begin window. This should take 1 to 5 minutes.

Step #2: Begin Sampling of Air for Formaldehyde Gas
Begin sampling with the AirScan passive formaldehyde gas test kit.
  • Record the start time on the back of the monitor.
  • Remove cap from the sampling port.
  • Clip the monitor near your breathing zone.
CAUTION: Do not expose the monitor to direct sunlight!!

Step #3: End Sampling of Air For Formadehyde Gas
For TWA Sampling:
  • After sampling for a full shift (4-8 hrs), place the cap over the sampling port.
  • Record the end time on back of the monitor.
  • Proceed to the next step (Develop Monitor).
For STEL Sampling:
  • After sampling for 15 minutes, place the cap over the sampling port.
  • Record the end time on the back of the monitor.
  • Keep the monitor in sampling position (clip side up) with the cap on for 30 minutes before proceeding to the next step.

Step #4: Develop Formaldehyde Gas Test Kit
Develop the AirScan passive formaldehyde gas test kit.
  • Remove the cap from the sampling port.
  • Hold the monitor upright with both hands
    (as shown).
  • Press the "B" bubble until it snaps.
Develop using the AirScan passive formaldehyde gas test kit
  • Turn the monitor to the left so the clip is in the down position. Hold there until the green developer fluid completely fills the reading window and it completely saturates the white disc in the sampling port.
Develop using the AirScan passive formaldehyde gas monitor
  • Lay the monitor flat on the table for 4 minutes. Be sure that the entire reading window remains filled with fluid.
Develop using the AirScan passive formaldehyde gas monitor
  • Pick the monitor up and turn it upright to drain developer solution out of reading window.

Step #5: Read Results of Formaldehyde Gas Test Kit
Read the results of the AirScan passive formaldehyde gas test.
  • Read the length of the developed line at its tip. (this example: 28 mm)
  • Refer to the conversion chart (supplied with the monitor) to obtain a reading in PPM.
  • If no line is visible, exposure is less than the minimum value on the conversion chart.
Interferents: Ammonia - greater than 7 ppm,
Acetaldehyde - greater than 5 ppm

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What do I do if the "BEGIN" window doesn't show a green line within 5 minutes after tapping the monitor on my palm?
A: Retap the monitor on your palm, and wait another 5 minutes.

Q: After seeing the line appear in the "BEGIN" window, how long can I wait before monitoring?
A: You can wait up to 3- minutes before monitoring.

Q: Why is it so important that the "BEGIN" window show a line before I monitor?
A: When the "BEGIN" line appears, it means that an extremely well-controlled, humid environment has been established inside the monitor. This humid environment is necessary for the monitor to react with the targeted analyte. The line may disappear from the "BEGIN" window at some point during the full sampling period, but the monitor is still active as long as the window showed the line at the beginning of the sampling period.

Q: Can the AirScan monitors be used for outdoor monitoring?
A: The AirScan monitors have been designed for indoor monitoring of toxic gases in the workplace, laboratories, and homes, and should not be used outdoors without a protective screen. If the monitor is to be used outdoors, the protective screen must be used in conjunction with the monitor to limit exposure to sunlight. These protective screens are available upon request.

Q: What effect does temporarily going outside the temperature and humidity requirements have? For example, if I were to go into a walk-in freezer for 5 minutes?
A: Going into environments with extremes of temperature and/or humidity for a few minutes should have no effect on the accuracy of the AirScan monitor.

Q: How long can I wait to develop the monitor after I cap it at the end of the sampling period?
A: You may wait no longer than 45 minutes after the end of the sampling period to develop the monitor. YOU CANNOT WAIT OVERNIGHT.

Q: Are the solutions inside the AirScan monitor hazardous?
A: The solutions inside the monitor are not hazardous if operated in accordance with the instructions (re: CFR 1910.1200(g) Material Safety Data Sheets). MSDS's are available from AirScan upon request.

Q: What if the developer solution does not saturate the white disc in the sampling port after the reading window fills?
A: Gently tap the corner of the monitor closest to the sampling port onto the palm of your hand (as seen in the second box of the "1. Activate Monitor" section of the Instructions). The disc must be fully saturated with developer solutions so that the solution will not flow out of the reading window when the monitor is placed flat on the table for the 4-minute development period.

Q: What if the line on the monitor is broken (non-continuous)?
A: Read the end of the line furthest down the millimeter scale. The broken line is likely due to a bubble over the film during the development step and does not affect your results.

Q: Can I use the monitor after the expiration date?
A: No. The film in the monitor may become too sensitive and your results will not be accurate.
